When I stepped into the old manor on the outskirts of Manchester, a narrow stone path caught my eye, winding through a wall of ivy into a terraced garden. That unassuming entrance led to a 200‑square‑metre haven of wildflowers, a small pond, as well as a wooden bench that faces the sky.
